The Institute of Philosophical Studies was formed in 1954 by the faculty of the philosophy department as ‘The Philosophical Study Association’ and was officially established in April 1960. Their founding conviction was to devise strategies for improving professional circumstances for philosophical studies and to produce outstanding researchers. The Institute of Philosophical Studies conducts research studies on the philosophical thought of the East and the West; therefore, serving as the philosophical storehouse for a new civilization. It also seeks to contribute to the fostering of logical, philosophical knowledge and thought of the general populace.

 

1. In 1954, ‘The Philosophical Study Association’ was formed by the faculty of our university’s Philosophy Department. The first issue of [Philosophical Study] was published in 1955.

2. In April 1960, ‘The Institute of Philosophical Studies’ was established within the College of Liberal Arts, with Prof. Lee Jong-woo as its first director.

3. On August 22, 1996, it was expanded and reorganized as an annex study institute of our university after undergoing organizational and systematic restructuring.

4. For two consecutive years, April 1999 and September 2000, it received the University President’s Award as an outstanding study institute in the humanities and social sciences in the evaluation of annex study institute.

5. In September 2002, it was selected by the National Research Foundation of Korea for support, under its humanities and social science basic research project, to conduct a study on <Public Rationality through Eastern and Western Philosophy> (from Sep.2002 to Aug.2005).

6. In September 2005, it was again chosen by the National Research Foundation of Korea to conduct a research study on <A Value-Theoretical Examination of Mind-Body Relations: A Comparative Study of Eastern and Western Philosophy> (from Sep.2005 to Aug.2008).

7. In July 2008, it was selected to conduct research on <Various Types and Cultivation Features of Unpublished Neo-Confucianism Theories> (from Jul.2008 to Jun.2010).

8. In December 2008, it was chosen for the National Research Foundation of Korea’s ‘Support Project of Research Institute’, focusing on research in <The Anthropology of Emotion> (from Dec.2008 to Nov.2017).
